1966 Fender Mustang Bass Dakota Red.

This is an amazing and 100% all original early Fender CBS era Mustang Bass, that came directly from one only and original owner who purchased the bass new in 1967. It’s in Very Good condition, with its original Hard case,

The 30″ short scale Mustang Bass was one of the last Leo Fender inventions before selling company to CBS, and it was finally released on 1966. Designed originally more like a “student” instrument, over the decades eventually became a secret weapon for many players cause it really fits into the band mix in a very cool way, unlike any other bass around. I’d put this right in between the Precision and the Jazz Bass.

Original Dakota Red finish, white perloid pickguard and thumbrest. As you can see there’s some honest wear, buckle rush, real checking and “patina” from years of playing. Serial # 193XXX clearly shows it’s a late 1966 instrument, potentiometers are dated ’66, neck stamp shows very clear 17 NOV 66 B, which means 17 = model code (Mustang Bass) – NOV 66 = month and date of production and B = neck profile. Pickups are dated early ’67 which leads to my guess that the instrument might’ve been assembled in later ’66/early ’67, although we prefer to say it’s a ’66 cause it has all the features from a late ’66 instrument.

The neck is something else, a typical Maple with a dark rosewood fretboard with pearl dots a B profile, with a really nice patina from years of being played. Truss rod works perfectly smooth as it should. Frets have normal wear from being a 56 year old instrument but still plays great. It’s been set and strung with a fresh set of D’addario Chromes flat wounds .045″ – .100″ and it really plays beautifully, with all the “modjo” you can expect.

The bridge still has the original mutes assembly although no foam was left. it has the classic Lollipop tuners in working order. Because it’s one of the first run, these original Fender Victoria hard case are black tolex case (instead of the typical silver one). It’s in great shape with all latches working.
